Meet the trustees
Allyson Broadhurst
Chair
Allyson Broadhurst is the owner and Director of Charis Group of companies, innovating and delivering welfare support schemes for the utility sector and Local Government, including trusts and hardship funds, social tariff and rebate schemes to deliver charitable support and goods directly to those who are vulnerable and in need. She has lived in Ely for over 45 years and as well as a fulltime career in business Allyson has been involved in Health and Local Government since the 1990’s including;
- Non Executive of Lifespan Healthcare NHS Trust including volunteer work as a Mental Health Act Manager
- Chair of a newly formed NHS Primary Care Trust for East Cambs and Fenland covering a wide geographic area and encompassing three community hospitals
- Chair of NHS Hospital Trust, Kings Lynn.
Allyson spent several years as an Ely City Councillor and Mayor, fundraising £63,000 towards new X-ray equipment, Princess of Wales Hospital. She has been a District Councillor, East Cambs District Council.
Allyson has been involved in a number of charities over the years but is currently Chair of The Princess of Wales Hospital (Ely) Charitable Trust and a Governor of the Thomas Parsons charity providing Alms Houses and hardship grants to those within the local area.
Allyson was one of the founding Board members, and subsequently Chair of The Cambridge Community Foundation Charity.
Brian Ashton
Trustee
Alongside a lifetime career in business and as a volunteer in the Conservative Party including 10 years as a Chairman of Conservative Associations, Brian joined the City of Ely Council in the 1980’s. During his first term as Mayor, the Ministry of Defence decided to close the RAF Hospital at Ely. Brian instigated and led the Action Committee for a Hospital in Ely until after nearly two years of vigorous campaigning it was transferred to the NHS as a community hospital.
Brian was then invited to join the Board of Lifespan Healthcare NHS Trust where he served as Vice-Chairman for seven years. During this time the Minor Injuries Unit was founded and many outpatient facilities established. He was invited by the GPs of East Cambridgeshire to Chair the fund-holding Primary Care Group for East Cambridgeshire. In recent years Brian was a Board member of the Clinical Commissioning Group for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough until standing down through health reasons.
Brian has also served as a Councillor and Leader of the District Council, a School Governor and as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. His other voluntary and charitable activities include chairing the Citizens Advice Bureau, Vice-President of the Cambridgeshire Branch of the British Red Cross and a member of the Council of St. John Ambulance.
Elisabeth Every
Trustee
With a background in human resources and business administration, working in London, Lis moved to Ely in 1973 as a Director and Company Secretary of the family business, a retail Volvo garage.
Lis retrained as a secondary school teacher of business, teaching in Ely, becoming a local authority education advisor, and then a Deputy Headteacher in Peterborough for 18 years.
Serving as a City of Ely Councillor for 12 years Lis was also Mayor (2014-2016). She subsequently became Chair of East Cambridgeshire District Council and Vice Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council.
She retains business links as a member of the Ely Chamber of Commerce and Cathedral Business Group. As Chair of the Academy Council for Ely College and a governor at Ely St John’s School, she works with both education and the business sector to foster relationships to support the skills agenda, careers and employability programmes.
Lis is involved in several charities as Chair of Voluntary and Community Action in East Cambridgeshire and Trustee of Needhams Trinity Foundation, Bishop Laney Foundation and Viva Arts and Community Group. She currently chairs the East Cambridgeshire Community Safety Partnership.
